Furious and disappointed at her brothers decision, believing "Man" will not know what to do with the power of "Hope", Athena pulls the Blade of Olympus from Kratos, he collapses, nearing death, as she departs. An uknown amount of time later, a trail of blood is seen leading away from an abandoned Blade of Olympus. It is all that remains atop the dust of Mt.Olympus, leaving Kratos' final fate unknown...

During a mental journey into his own psyche, Kratos is saved by Pandora, and with the help of his wife Lysandra, forgives himself for his past sins with the power of "HOPE". When Kratos had opened Pandoras Box the first time, he unknowingly acquired the power of "HOPE", though his vengeance consumed him, the power of "HOPE" is actually what allowed him to defeat Ares. Kratos regains consciousness and viciously beats the incarnation of Zeus as the Monster of Fear, to death. Thus ending the reign of the Olympians once and for all it seems...
The Monster Of Fear

With all his rage and vengeance, Kratos wields the Blade of Olympus and impales Zeus against Gaia's heart, seemingly killing both of them. As Kratos departs with the Blade he is attacked by an incarnation of Zeus, who is now fully consumed with the Monster of Fear that had been eating away at him since being infected when Kratos opened Pandoras Box the first time. Kratos loses consciousness, becoming trapped in his own dark psyche.
The Gods of Olympus Shall Fall

After destroying Hermes, his own half-brother Hercules, and breaking the neck of Zeus' wife Hera for insulting Pandora, Kratos is distracted by his need for revenge against Zeus in the Flame of Olympus chamber. Pandora uses this opportunity to sacrifice herself to quell the flames. Kratos is devastated he allowed someone he cared about like a daughter to die because of his need for vengeance. He then opens Pandora's Box once again and discovers it is empty inside. Fueled with rage like never before, Kratos wages war with Zeus, only to be intervened by Gaia. Avoiding the Titans wrath, Zeus flees inside Gaia's body, Kratos follows.
With every ounce of vengeance propelling Kratos to escape the mysterious depths and dangers of The Underworld, the bloodthirsty Spartan encounters Hades, and destroys the Lord of the Underworld, ripping out and absorbing his soul. Escaping the Underworld through a Hyperion Gate, Kratos renews his journey up along Olympus, now facing the wrath of both the Titans and the Gods. He rescues Pandora, the child-like creation of Hephaestus (Craftsmen of the Gods) who is the key to extinguishing the Flame of Olympus and revealing its contents.

In The Underworld, an ethereal version of Athena returns to aid Kratos in his quest to kill Zeus. Though he is puzzled why Athena would help him kill their father (especially after giving her life for him), Athena speaks of knowing a "greater truth" and informs Kratos the Flame of Olympus is the only way to defeat Zeus. Athena explained that the true power to kill Zeus rests within Pandoras Box, inside the Flame of Olympus, and the key to opening is Pandora herself.
